Côte d’Ivoire, often referred to as the Ivory Coast in English, is a developing country located along the Atlantic Coast of West Africa. It has a population of around 24 million inhabitants, many of whom are engaged in smallholder cash crop agriculture, with a focus on cocoa and coffee production in particular. While this is true in most of the country, Côte d’Ivoire has a recent history of economic growth and diversification, with much of this development clustered around the major economic hub of Abidjan, in the south.
Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire’s largest city and economic center, is a quickly growing metropolis that had a population of 4.7 million at last census in 2014. Thanks to the construction of the Vridi canal, which was completed in 1951, Abidjan has become a major seaport in the region. Abidjan is also home to the headquarters of the national flag carrier airline, Air Ivoire, whose major hub is at Port Bouet Airport in Abidjan.
In the city, there are many new market opportunities popping up due to the population growth and the attendant increased demand for transport, housing, public facilities, and various goods. Shortages in these areas are to be expected for a time, expected growing pains for a city that has grown so fast, that it shouldn’t be able to keep up with demand. That is why it is such a blessing for Abidjan to have AOL Services, a private company that is working around the clock to supply what the people of Abidjan need.

AOL Services is a diversified service provider based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire that has divisions devoted to construction, general trade, and providing vehicles for hire. This diversification is a reflection of the massive demand in Abidjan, and AOL Services, instead of ignoring it, utilized its capital and business acumen to provide the needed services. AOL Services, today, doesn’t just work in Abidjan; it has operations in 7 of Côte d’Ivoire’s 12 regions.
Among AOL Services lines of business, if any could be called its flagship product, it would definitely be its construction services. As Abidjan and the country grows and coalesces into a nation of urban conglomerations, going away from—but not abandoning—its agrarian culture, building housing in a sustainable manner is incredibly important. AOL Services has made it its central mission to provide affordable, sustainable, and high quality housing and facilities to Côte d’Ivoire’s growing population and municipal services.
In order to complete its mission, AOL Services has been pursuing innovative building techniques and materials, such as earth construction solutions, allowing for the erection of sturdy, durable structures without the use of costly, rare, or unsustainable materials. To this end, AOL Services has been utilizing clay brick fired from locally sourced, plentiful materials. This saves money, reduces transport costs and related carbon emissions, and doesn’t take important environmental resources such as timber.
And while AOL Services provides value for its communities through its much needed services, it has also made it a priority to give back in a more direct fashion. The leadership of the company founded an NGO called “Land of Men,” which provides charitable assistance to widows and orphans affected by war.
For fulfilling the demands of its growing nation, for its focus on quality work, and its innovative approach to sustainable development, AOL Services from Côte d’Ivoire is being recognized with the 2016 BID Quality Award, one of the highest international honors for organizational quality and excellence.
