Aluminum was once more valuable than gold
Elektrik Makine Ticaret A.Ş. (EMTA) is a group of Turkish companies whose roots go back to 1974. All of the members of the group are involved in the power generation business, and together they manufacture power transmission lines and cables as well as towers and other parts for power transmission infrastructure; provide project management and engineering services for power plants; operate electricity transmission and distribution networks; and sell and distribute all classes of machinery and materials for power plants. The company has grown from a purely domestic enterprise to one that now has offices in Iraq, Libya, and Canada and does business in more than 50 countries. As a diversified company, EMTA is constantly seeking opportunities for investment in manufacturing and other energy related fields, as well as making internal investments in human resources, technology, quality and environmental management systems, production capacity and innovation. EMTA believes that this internal investment is the key to sustainable growth and continuous quality improvement.
Aluminum Powers the Generation of Electricity
For high tension transmission of electrical power, the industry has turned to aluminum as its workhorse. Its light weight, high conductivity, resistance to corrosion, and tensile strength have made it king in the production of cables and wires as well as towers and motor casings. Before the twentieth century, however, aluminum would have been seen as an unlikely candidate for all these uses.
Aluminum is a metal that has only recently been commercialized. One hundred fifty years ago, it was more expensive than gold, and was used exclusively in jewellery and other luxury items. Kings were crowned with aluminum, and royalty adorned their bodies and their tables with aluminum objects. Metalsmiths appreciated the fact that it was easy to work and didn’t lose its silvery lustre. It was often alloyed with gold and other precious metals. Even after aluminum processing became cheap enough for the metal to be used more generally, it was still a popular medium for sculptures and other works of art. Many objects created during the Art Deco movement, for instance, are made of aluminum.
In the late 1880’s, aluminum began to be produced in commercial quantities, and its resistance to corrosion made it ideal for outdoor applications such as furniture, streetlamps, window casings, kitchenware, utensils and outdoor art, uses that it is still being put to today. However, aluminum is more than just ductile, pretty and resistant. It is also lightweight and strong, and these characteristics are what led to the rapid increase in its use as an industrial material.
By the end of WWII, aluminum´s special advantages were being taken advantage of in a wide variety of industries, allowing the manufacture of more efficient airplanes and motors. Beverage cans were much cheaper when made with aluminum and easier to recycle. Aluminum furniture in public buildings was easier to install, and more durable than upholstered furniture. Aluminum foil appears in kitchens in every corner of the world. And then there is aluminum cables and wires, known as “conductors” in the industry.
On the manufacturing side, EMTA has an aluminum casting facility capable of producing 60,000 metric tons per year, with plans to expand. The plant uses 99.7% pure aluminum ingots in its continuous casting process, producing rolls of 9.5 mm and 12 mm rod and multiple gauges of wire. Customers can choose from among a wide variety of aluminum and aluminum alloy products. For instance, the AAC conductors are pure aluminum strands for use in short spans and areas where corrosion resistance is at a premium. ACSR has a steel core surrounded by aluminum wire. The steel core gives the product added strength, making them more suitable for longer spans. AAAC conductors are alloyed with magnesium, giving it better corrosion resistance and conductivity than ACSR and more strength than AAC. For clients that need insulated conductors,, EMTA also produces ABC bundled cable.
Because of its diversity, EMTA is the domestic market leader in Turkey and now exports to more than fifty countries in the Middle East, CIS, North Africa and Europe.
EMTA Project Management
EMTA also leverages its 40+ years experience to provide turnkey solutions for power generating enterprises. EMTA fabricates transmission towers and conductors and has its own engineering, project management, test and commissioning teams. The end result is that EMTA is able to make turnkey installations for generator, turbine, tanks, electrical balance of plant and mechanical balance of plant packages. Clients are ensured that the installation is properly integrated, providing a cost effective and reliable solution. EMTA professionals can now be found providing world class project management services in 5 Middle Eastern countries and in Canada.
EMTA’s growth can be attributed to a persistent focus on quality improvement and customer service. Over the decades, EMTA has delivered multiple projects on time and under budget. And these projects are evolving. With increased emphasis on renewable energy, EMTA finds itself adjusting with the times, working together with clients to find cleaner and cheaper sources of power. The company has managed projects on dozens of hydroelectric and wind power plants and expects that segment of the business to continue growing into the future.
Generating plants aren’t the only area where EMTA applies its experience and expertise. The company can also be found managing energy transmission projects up to 750kV, along with substations and switchyards, medium voltage distribution networks, and motorway lighting projects. Experience gained in each type of project reinforces competence in the others, and clients appreciate the fact that EMTA has at its disposal engineers, technicians and project managers who have “cross platform” knowledge and expertise.
Sales, Marketing and Distribution
EMTA is also a sales & marketing company for all areas related to energy generation, transmission and distribution. The key advantage that EMTA offers to its clients is its vast in house engineering, installation and manufacturing experience, which allows its client advisors to work as true partners in creating the best solutions for the customer’s specific needs. For clients with engineering staff, they know that they can talk with someone who speaks their language and understands their needs. The work of our customers’ technical teams becomes much simpler.
Because of its performance, EMTA is on the preferred and qualified manufacturer list of major public and private companies such as Turkish Electricity Transmission Inc., Turkish Electricity Distribution Inc., General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, and Turkish State Railways.
Performing its Work Safely and Responsibly
Environmental responsibility is taken very seriously at EMTA. The energy industry in general has made great strides in improving environmental performance, and EMTA’s policy on the environment is based on the principles of maintaining strict compliance at all time of applicable environmental regulations, choosing technologies that take into special consideration their environmental impact, communicating with clients, suppliers and other stakeholders regarding environmental issues on projects, training employees to be aware of environmental issues in their jobs, and taking advantage of recycling opportunities wherever they can be found.
The result of all this is that EMTA has earned ISO 14001 certification for its Environmental Management System.
EMTA understands that its most valuable asset is its people, and the company invests a lot of resources in ensuring that it has the best personnel available and that they are provided with a safe, intellectually stimulating and rewarding work environment. Human resources is dedicated to providing constant training, rewarding excellence, and making continuous quality improvement in HR policy. All employees are expected to be customer service oriented, committed to company growth and success, and enthusiastic about working as part of a team. The international reputation of the company, its rapid growth, its ISO certifications, and its record of nearly 1,000,000 man hours with no accidents resulting in injury, disability or death are the results of the company’s focus on its people.
