Qatar will be hosting the 2022 FIFA world cup
Khayyat Contracting and Trading Company (KCT) in Qatar has been selected to receive the BID Quality Crown Award for 2015. KCT has been in business since 1983 and stands out for its commitment to quality management and continuous improvement. The company has expanded into global markets and has become a contractor of reference for the region.
As everyone knows, Qatar has been awarded the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament, which will be played in 12 stadiums throughout the country. A massive number of construction projects will need to be completed for the tournament, and on September 16 it was announced that work had begun on the stadium where the opening game and the final will be played. The Lusail Stadium will hold 80,000 fans.
Qatar forms a peninsula in the middle of the southern shore of the Persian Gulf. And standing on the peninsula a few hundred kilometers to the east stands another impressive construction project which was opened in Dubai in 2010 after more than five years of construction.
The Tallest Building in the World…..So Far
Ever since the first modern tall building, the Eiffel Tower, was completed in 1889, engineers, architects and builders have engaged in a battle of one upmanship that astounds us every few years. Today, the record for the world’s tallest building is held by the Burj Khalifi in Dubai. The numbers associated with it are staggering: over 45,000 cubic metres of concrete in the foundation alone (and 330,000 cubic metres total), more than 6,000 miles of rebar, 380 engineers, and more than 2,000,000 square feet of usable space in a tower that rises 828 metres above the desert floor.
Such a massive undertaking required the collaboration of thousands of people, new techniques in design and construction, and cutting edge technologies. Engineers had to think about temperature in a new way (the top is about 6 degrees celsius cooler than the bottom), move thousands of gallons of condensate from the air conditioning, model design elements in a wind tunnel, design enhanced evacuation systems, address air pressure changes from top to bottom, and face other challenges unique to building the tallest structure ever. While the scale of the building is unique, large construction projects are being built all over the world, and each one of them require world class engineering, teamwork, and project management.
A Construction Star in Qatar
KCT’s participation in such emblematic projects as the Doubletree Hilton (first 5 star international hotel in Old Salata), the Lekhwiya football stadium, the Union Residential Tower or the Mall of Qatar shows the trust that discerning clients have placed in the company.
Because it is able to call upon the expertise of more than 3,000 professionals, KCT has the human resources to initiate fast-track design and project methods that provide shorter delivery timelines. This is achieved by overlapping functions of job design, procurement and construction processes which result in project handovers in shorter time, and at less costs than conventional construction programs.
The KCT team is complete, with architects, engineers, project managers and tradesmen who use world class technique and technology to remain on the cutting edge of the business. In construction management, for instance, KCT has been involved throughout the GCC countries, often partnering with local firms, to deliver projects on time and on budget. KCT was also one of the first movers in Qatar with design-build capability, and has been awarded many turnkey contracts as a result.
Success and continuous quality improvement do not come by accident, and they normally start with written standards that are transparent and to which everyone from the top down is held accountable. At KCT, those standards begin with the company’s Code of Ethics, which animates all company relationships with all of its stakeholders. The BID committee was impressed with the comprehensiveness of the Code of Ethics at KCT, and believes that the scope of projects KCT has been able to land is a direct result of its strict Code. It is posted on the company website for all to see, and features a commitment to honesty and integrity that goes far beyond compliance with the law, and includes specific consideration of the people indirectly affected by their operations and consideration for the environment. Weekends in Qatar fall on Friday and Saturday
KCT also has written targets in the areas of human resources, accident and delivery rates, and environmental impact. Total Quality Management is encapsulated in a six level plan with specific objectives, tools, metrics, and a Quality Team. KCT keeps the process transparent by making publicly available its Corporate Induction Guide, Code of Ethics, HSE Guide and QA/QC Guide.
The commitment to quality at KCT hasn’t gone unnoticed, as it was the first company in the GCC to receive recognition of global standards from the British Standards Institution (BSI) Group Middle East in: Quality (ISO 9001); Environment (ISO 14001), Health & Safety (OHSAS 18001) and Integrated Management (PAS 99). KCT was just the 49th company in the world to receive the PAS 99: 2012- Integrated Management System Certification. Because of its commitment to continuous quality improvement, Khayyat Contracting has been selected to receive the BID Quality Crown Award for 2015 at the convention in London.
