Gabon, on the west coast of Central Africa, is one of the most unique countries in Africa. A small, French-speaking country of about 1.5 million people, Gabon gained independence from France in 1960, and has had only 3 presidents since. Gabon has been one of the most prosperous countries in continental Africa, having the 4th highest rating on the Human Development Index among sub-Saharan African countries. It boasts high levels of healthcare infrastructure, with 90% of residents having regular access to care.
Gabon’s prosperity is due largely to its long-central oil export industry, which accounts for 43% of its GDP. Though oil is still a central component of the economy, revenues have been slowly declining, due to diminishing reserves and unstable global oil prices. For this reason, the importance of diversifying the economy has never been higher. Thankfully, this process has been moving forward, thanks in part to the country’s dynamic capital, Libreville.
Libreville, a port city on the Komo River along the Atlantic coast, is Gabon’s capital and largest city. A 2012 estimate put the population at 797,000. In addition to the infrastructure for the Gabon’s oil export activity, it is home to thriving shipbuilding, brewing, and woodcutting industries. Other exports from the port include raw materials such as wood, rubber, and cocoa from the main port and the deepwater port in Owendo. Many other industries are beginning to develop in Libreville as well, and one of the main companies facilitating the economic diversification and growth is STR Gabon.
