Located far in Southeast Africa, Mozambique is among the fastest-developing countries in the world. Once a Portuguese colony, Mozambique continues to maintain Portuguese as its only official language, though it is used primarily in business and trade and is spoken as a second-language by only about half of the population. With vast deposits of natural resources, and a quickly growing industrial sector working in food and beverage processing, chemicals, aluminium, and petroleum, Mozambique is poised to continue its transformation into an economically vital and developed nation.
At the turn of the 20th century, Maputo attracted the attention of some of the world’s foremost working architects. The Central Train Station, still in use, stands as a wondrous example of colonial architecture built in the European style during this time. Famous architects such as Pancho Guedes, Herbert Baker, and Thomas Honney all contributed works to the city’s first construction boom. Then again, in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Maputo had become the center of attention for a second construction boom, with many decidedly modern buildings being added to the city, establishing a tradition of forward-thinking design that continues to this day. Among the companies working in this mode of innovative and progressive architectural design in Maputo in present times is VEDOR Lda, a leader in the industry. VEDOR Lda was founded in 2008 to combine the talents, skills, and specializations of engineers, project managers, designers, urban planners, and architects under one roof. This diversified service firm, as it were, is able to take on a substantial variety of projects while still focusing on quality, improvement, and innovation in each of its specialties. Its sensibilities and values shaped by the traditions of its city, VEDOR is forward-thinking, creative, and dynamic.
The company specializes in helping its country's newly established municipalities create the governmental institutions, urbanization plans, and participatory governmental processes that will be necessary in order to establish functioning local governments. Since 1998, Mozambique has been undergoing a governmental decentralization plan, allowing the country's many growing cities to take more responsibility in self-governance. Collaborating with national institutions, local governments, and the National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique (ANAMM), VEDOR has established itself as the leader in the fields of physical planning, oversight, consulting, and budgetory processes.
With its wide array of technical experts, creatives, and designers, the firm is uniquely able to understand how the interplay between different disciplines results in the urban environment, and how they can better work together to achieve a greater result. The increasing density and size of Maputo requires innovative thinking to build the homes, public spaces, schools, and government institutions of the future. VEDOR has lent its expertise to creating management plans for entire municipalities, so it is no surprise that the company excels in managing itself.
Quality is essential to this company’s management plan, and it manifests itself in areas as diverse as the way that client-satisfaction is relentlessly pursued, the way that its team members pursue their own development and continued learning, and the way that the company maintains strict attention to detail. Whether is managing the construction of townhomes, designing schools and hospitals for the public sector, consulting with clients, rehabilitating homes and buildings, or pushing its capabilities forward through submitting to design competitions, VEDOR is as Quality-focused as they come.
For its contributions to its city, for its emphasis on Innovation and creativity, and for its relentless pursuit of Quality and Continuous Improvement, VEDOR Lda from Mozambique has been selected to receive the 2016 BID International Quality Award.
